Native Son Returns to Collect City's History

At the tender age of 5, Russ Cross unknowingly became a collector when an uncle returning home from World War II presented him with a helmet. Later, Cross's dad gave him a German helmet. Today, Cross's collection of military helmets numbers about 25 and is displayed in his den at his Los Alamitos home.

But Cross's true passion for collecting didn't emerge until decades later. The Long Beach native, who grew up in Wilmington, Calif., returned to join his hometown police force in 1966. He would serve there for 23 years, rising from patrolman to commander, before becoming chief of the Banning Police Department, where he retired in 1995.
